Halo 3 and Bioshock Not “Next-Gen” Games - Some Say

Posted in » Gaming News, Xbox 360

Bioshock Screenshot

Whether Halo 3 or Bioshock were strictly made for the Xbox 360 or not, we don’t know, but there’s some people out there saying they weren’t.

David Braben of Frontier Developments says, they’re better looking, but still the same.

“I loved the 1930s-1950s atmosphere of BioShock: the lovely Art Deco visuals and the audio that worked especially well. “Overall the whole game was beautifully executed, but the gameplay itself was not ‘next-gen’.”

“I found Halo 3 great fun, too, but also a little disappointing - as although there were a few nice touches and improved graphical fidelity, it hadn’t really moved on much from Halo 2in terms of the gameplay.”

“Madden” Video Game Frenzy Again!

Mention “Madden” this time of year and most everyone knows the reference IS NOT pertaining to the Hall of Fame coach/sportscaster. It’s all about his video game! In an industry seemingly obsessed over aliens, fast cars, and crime, John Madden’s football series rushes its way annually to the top of the sales charts, selling some 60 million copies in the past 17 years. Sony Pulls Two Games From The PlayStation Store

Sony has pulled an additional two PS1 titles from the PlayStation Store for what they have termed “technical problems.” Last week Sony yanked back Medievil because of a fatal game stopping bug. This time on the recall rack, Sony chose Crash Bandicoot 2 and Spyro 2. (more…)

Grand Theft Auto IV Delayed!

Take Two just announced Grand Theft Auto IV will be delayed from its originally scheduled October release date until the second fiscal quarter of 2008, sometime between February and April of 2008. Though they cited no direct cause for the delay, Take-Two Chairman Strauss Zelnick said “certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected.” In addition, due to the outstanding ratings problems, they’ve also announced that Manhunt 2 would miss its planned release this fiscal year. Halo’s Covenant Laser Tag Guns Coming Soon

Halo’s Covenant Laser Tag Guns Coming Soon

If you haven’t gotten hyped enough over the forthcoming third installment of the Halo series, perhaps you might want to get your paws on these illified (and expensive) toy guns from Jasman Toys. Apparently, the Halo 3-modeled firearms will not only look really bad-ass on your mantelpiece at home, but the recoiling, sound-projecting, light-flashing gats will also enable you to play a game of “advanced” laser tag, called “Halo Laser Pursuit.” With the accompanying wearable laser target you can try and reenact your favorite scenes from the games, as the receivers perform somewhat like Halo’s shields, or so says Jasman. Really the only way this game of tag differs from the actual game is that no one dies — and it’s not nearly as much fun. Priced between $79.99 and $119.99, available in October.

Handheld Arcade Games Can Be Found on eBay

Handheld Arcade Games Can Be Found on eBay

Retro Treasures points us to a set of “handheld” arcade games (more like tabletop) up for auction on eBay. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaxian, and Dracula have been preserved from the dark era of 1981 and are fully operational, supporting two players simultaneously and running off those not-necessarily-rechargeable things called C batteries. The auctioneer has several other tabletop arcade games on the block, including Donkey Kong and Q-Bert. The prices seem a little steep for some, but sometimes nostalgia knows no limits.

Epic Games Being Sued for “Faulty” Unreal Engine 3

Looks like there’s trouble on the horizon for Epic Games as they are being sued by Silicon Knights

The lawsuit that the widely used Unreal Engine 3 “did not work as Epic represented it would and, moreover, Epic has been unable or unwilling to fix it.”

Silicon Knights goes on to say that Epic “never intended to deliver Unreal Engine 3 as a fully functional game engine as promised,” and that Epic merely licensed the engine to collect fees from developers in order to fund its own development of Gears of War on 360.

A Couple Obsessed With Dungeons & Dragons Starves Babies

Posted in » Gaming News

Hey gamers, don’t do this: A couple was so obsessed with the Internet and video games that they left their babies starving and suffering of other health problems. They also pleaded guilty to child neglect. The children of Michael and Iana Straw, a boy age 22 months and a girl age 11 months, were severely malnourished and near death last month when doctors saw them after social workers took them to a hospital, authorities said. Both children are doing well and gaining weight in foster care, prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria told the Reno Gazette-Journal. (more…)

Sonic and Golden Axe now on XBLA

Sonic and Golden Axe now on XBLA

You have to feel for the guy or gal who has to write the blade descriptions for Xbox Live Arcade games. Take this week’s release of Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe (both 400 points/$5) for example. What does one say about Sonic at this point? Our description would be something like “It’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Buy it … or don’t.” Then we’d just fill out the empty space with a picture of those cats playing Pokemon or something.

Now, with Golden Axe, we’d probably write “It’s not as good as you remember,” which is why we don’t work for Microsoft.
